A resort with a great price might be a poor fit if the beach isn't what you expected or the airport transfer takes longer than you planned. A multi-stop adventure can be incredible, but only if the travel days leave enough time to enjoy each destination.
When I help plan Mexico and Central America vacations, I look beyond the headline price. I compare the location, room and resort experience, flights, transfers, activities, travel requirements, and the pace that makes sense for you. Sometimes the best choice is a straightforward all-inclusive stay. Other times, it's a trip with a little more exploring built in.

A Few Questions Worth Answering Before You Book
From choosing the country to understanding what's included, these are the questions I would want you to think through before making a decision.
Which Mexico or Central America destination is best for a first trip?
Mexico is a strong starting point if you want plenty of beach-resort choices and a relatively straightforward getaway. Costa Rica suits travelers excited about wildlife, volcanoes, and nature. Belize is especially appealing for reefs, islands, and jungle experiences, while Panama offers an interesting mix of city, canal, rainforest, and coastal travel. The best choice depends on your interests, comfort level, flights, and budget—not just the most popular destination.
Should I choose an all-inclusive resort or a multi-stop itinerary?
Choose an all-inclusive stay when your priorities are relaxing, keeping meals and many on-site activities convenient, and limiting daily transportation. Consider a custom or multi-stop itinerary when ruins, wildlife, small towns, local food, or several landscapes are central to the trip. Neither approach is automatically better. I would look at how many vacation days you have and how much time you want to spend moving between places.
Do U.S. travelers need passports or other entry documents?
For international flights to Mexico and Central America, U.S. citizens should plan on traveling with a valid U.S. passport book. Passport-validity rules, entry forms, visas, onward-ticket requirements, and rules for children can vary by country and change over time. Check the official requirements for your destination and itinerary before booking and again before departure. My Travel Documents Checklist explains what to review.
What costs should I compare beyond the advertised vacation price?
Check baggage, airport transfers, resort or local fees, room category, excursions, meals outside any included plan, transportation between destinations, travel protection, and cancellation terms. Also factor in flight schedules and how much vacation time a long transfer or connection might use. A lower upfront price isn't necessarily the better value once the full trip is compared.
