A hotel can look like a great deal until you add parking, a rental car, attraction tickets, or an extra travel day. And a road trip that looks easy on a map can feel very different once you account for stops, traffic, and the people coming along.
When I help plan a U.S. vacation, I look at the entire experience: where you're starting, how much time you have, what you want to do, and how the logistics affect your budget and enjoyment. The goal is a trip that works in real life, not just one that looks good on paper.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Go
Whether you're considering a weekend getaway or a bigger trip across the country, these are some of the questions I think are worth answering early.
How do I choose the right U.S. vacation destination?
Start with the people going and the experience you want: beaches, cities, scenery, outdoor activities, entertainment, or time together. Then compare your available days, the season, travel time, and budget. A nearby three-night getaway calls for different choices than a ten-day road trip or a multi-island Hawaii vacation.
Is it better to drive or fly for a U.S. vacation?
Look beyond the ticket price or mileage. Driving can make sense for regional trips, families carrying lots of gear, and multi-stop vacations. Flying may save valuable vacation time on longer routes, but airport transfers, baggage, parking, and rental cars affect the total cost. I would compare the full door-to-door journey before deciding.
How far in advance should I plan a domestic vacation?
For school breaks, major events, popular national parks, Alaska, Hawaii, and larger family trips, starting six to twelve months ahead often gives you more choices. A flexible weekend getaway might come together much sooner. If a specific hotel, tour, cruise, or event is central to the trip, check its availability early rather than relying on a general timeline.
What expenses should I compare besides flights and hotels?
Check taxes and resort or destination fees, parking, rental-car costs, transfers, attraction tickets, park reservations, meals, and cancellation terms. Also consider the cost of extra nights or time spent traveling between stops. The lowest advertised rate isn't always the best overall value once the full itinerary is considered.
